I am big fan of Farhan Akhtar...and it doesn't matter wht he's doing...DIRECTING......PRODUCING.....ANCHORING A TV SHOW....or ACTING...I just love him....and his stupid jokes in his PHATI AWAAZ............
So....don't mind....if I end up praising this movie...coz thats wt I'm gonna do..anyway....
Moving on to this psycho-thriller....well..its hard to outcast Karthik Calling Karthik in such a category.....coz...its really not that Psycho types....its a very sweet...romantic....gentle thriller.....which has a good story....that would keep you bound to your seats throughout the run-time of the movie. Even when you go for a lil snack break during the intermission..u'd be probably thinking...."who has called him........again?"
A friend of mine told me...that the movie is ok till the climax.....while the climax is one big CHOO-panti....Thank God...I didn't fall for his EXPERT verdict...huh....the stupid guy...wud hv striped me off one good movie....
Though the concept used in the story is quite complex.....but the story is very simple......
Karthik Narayan....a bright minded IIM topper....and a big time loser in real life.....has this mental disorder....called...CHLENZERO....er...I forgot that term...its something to do with MULTIPLE MIND DISORDER....something that we have seen in Aparichit....and Bhool Bhullaiya....
As a child he was bothered by a Bully elder brother.....who actually never ever existed....and pleaded himself guilty of killing his non-existent brother.....
Getting off Past....his present sucked as well....He led a lonely life....underpaid.....the girl he liked...didn't even notice him in the office...even though they'd been working there for 4 years....and everyday he'd type in an email for the girl....Shonali (Deepika Padukone)...which instead of sending...he would save it in his drafts....while his honesty and simplicity always enraged his boss...and soon...he is fired....
And that's when he enters into LOONLAND! again..... He decides to end his life...by gulping sleeping pills....and that's when the phone rings...for the first time....
He drops the pills...and picks up the phone.....talks to someone on the other line...who sounds the same as he does....knows everything about him....and his surroundings...someone...who called himself...KARTHIK.....
Duh! it was his alter ego.....and this...particular beeped exactly at 5 am.....everyday...and he'd talk to him....and do whatever the Karthik on the phone asked him to....and thus begins a transition.....in life for the young loser.....and in a few days....he is the HEAD OF BUSINESS in the bloody same company that kicked him out.....Deepika soon trusts him...and starts loving him.....his life....is one small heaven....and in return....all that the VOice asks him is to keep those conversations private.....but Mr.Karthik here...is an honest n sincere lover...he reveals it to....his ladylove...who starts thinking he needs treatment......
Soon...he reveals it to his psychiatrist (Shefali Chayya) too......she dismisses it as his imagination.....but he insists her to believe it...and so...she decides to hear it herself...and the very next day...the psychiatrist is sitting next to Karthik on his couch staring at the telephone console.....early in the morning....and lo! at 5 am....the phone rings....and she runs away in a shock attack! Same happens with deepika...
While..his alter ego started ruining his life....making calls to his boss....and his clients...that resulted in a loss of job and respect in the office....even his bank.....and all his savings is donated to a charity.....
Karthik now knew his problem....that he should stay away from phones....and like a blind man...he leaves Mumbai....to somewhere he never knew until he reached there....he arrives at Kalluvettam....Kerala...(yae! I was taken back to Kerala......again.....muahh...love u farhan...n vishal lalwani for making htis movie).....and soon he begins a new life here,.....working in a small courier company.....impressing his boss with his sincerity....and saving a mail a day in his draftbox......AND MOST IMPORTANTLY STAYING AWAY FROM ANY KINDS OF PHONE....things become normal....and HE FINDS PEACE OF MIND IN COCHIN.........
But again....therez a backlash...his new boss asks him to get a landline....to keep connected....and again...he buys that same old telephone set.......WITH THE SELF REMINDER FEATURE.....which towards the end is revealed as the VILLAIN!
Yup!...farhan in his sub conscious state wud record his message.....and set it to ring at 5 am......and at 5 am...the phone wud ring....like a normal telephone call....Farhan wud pick it up,,,,in his CONSCIOUS mind.....and talk.....THAT WAS ALL THE MYSTERY.............The demon was the phone....
That was the story....coming to music....the music and the background score..both were groovy and very much apt.....The song Heyya...and Karthik Calling Karthik is still haunting..me.....while...the camera work has also been pretty above average....in the beginning and awesome towards the end.....especially the shots taken in Kerala....is awesome.....The story has enough humour and substance in it to keep an intelligent movie-goer engrossed in the plot.....Movie was more technical than masala.....and Vishal Lalwani's first outing as a director is worth commending....While the acting department boasts of just Farhan and Deepika...while the other names are either unknown or little known....but its FARHAN all the way...Deepika looks staggeringly HOT!....esp in that gray t-shirt....she wears when she goes to Karthik's house....waiting for the phone to ring...HOT!
So the final verdict --> Great movie....must watch it..if u admire good films.....
