Story
A group of five terrorists hijack a flight carrying 75 passengers including a minister, a leading actor and a doctor. They intend to take it to Rawalpindi but will be forced to land it at Tirupathi due to engine failure. They demand the release their leader, Yousuf Khan who is a dreadful terrorist.
The defense ministry comes into action and sends Home secretary Vishwanath (Prakash Raj) to Tirupati to negotiate with the hijackers. A team of commandoes headed by Major Ravindra (Nagarjuna) also comes to Tirupathi.
Even though the home secretary has faith in Major Ravindra, he says no to the commando operation as he doesn’t get consent from the government. As a result, they will be forced to release Yousuf Khan.
But things taken another turn when Yousuf Khan gets killed in a road accident on the way. In such a do or die situation, Major Ravindra and his team starts commando operation to rescue the passengers. And how did they accomplish the mission forms the rest of the story.
Performances
With good narration, director Radha Mohan did not give any scope for tiresomeness. Though the film has a slow and a dull start, it gains momentum and draws full attention as it progress. Throughout the run time (about 120 minutes), the film doesn`t go dropping even once.
As a NSG commando, Nagarjuna had given a striking performance. With good physique and outstanding performance, he brings authenticity to the role. He had become a trend setter for a film without songs and heroine. He deserves high praises for taking up such a role despite his image (as romantic hero).
Though he appears for a short time, Prakash Raj makes his presence felt throughout the film. Adding his experience to the character, he exhibited right emotions in crucial times.
Not up to his levels, but Brahmanandam’s comedy is OK. Poonam Kaur and Sana Khan looked good in their roles. Vijay, Bharat Reddy, Harsha Vardhan and Prithvi did their bit as required.
Technical Aspects
Shot on digital Red Camera, KV Guhan has delivered excellent cinematography. It is a major asset to the film. Editing is good. Art department deserves special appreciation for building up a plane set that exactly replicates the interior of a plane. Background score is good; it was mesmeric during crucial sequences. Dialogues are not up to the mark and could have been better. Though an experiment and not a high budget film, production values are good.
Final Verdict
In his 25-year film career, Nagarjuna went on several experiences, but ‘Gaganam’ is completely different from all his previous ones. The film has many– suspense, emotions, thrill, twists and turns, tensions, humor etc. that keep the audience glued to seats. Though serious and devoid of songs and heroine(s), the entertainment proportion is up to the mark and the audiences get a feel of watching a feel good movie.
